I touched the doorframe and thought of the woman I had been the day Victor told me he wouldn't pay to keep me alive.
I wished I could go back and tell her something.
Not that the cancer would disappear.
Not that every injustice would be repaired.
Not even that she would never be afraid again.
I would tell her that she was still a mother, still a person, and still entitled to a future.
